Started from the garage,

now we’re here.

When I took a letterpress class on a whim in 2014, I had no idea that it would change my life. Swell Press has grown from a single-press side-hustle in my small garage, to a bonafide company with 7 presses. Over the years I’ve shared what I’ve learned on social media. I’ve developed a course to help you design confidently for letterpress, whether you own your own press or not.

Course modules include…

  • What is Letterpress?

This module will be dedicated to explaining what letterpress is, how letterpress started, and why it has experienced a cultural resurgence in recent years. You will learn about the pros & cons of letterpress printing in this session, as well as how its limitations are often its greatest assets.

  • Types of Presses

There are 3 main types of letterpress machines used in stationery printing. In this module we will explore all three types of machines and review their strengths & weaknesses. Mainly, we’ll go in depth about each machine, and which one is the right choice (and WRONG choice!) for you. We will also cover specifics such as the cost, capabilities, type of paper stock they can handle, how much floor space, power wattage, or other equipment you’ll need for each specific press.

  • Designing for Letterpress

This will be a large portion of the course. Letterpress is a truly unique art form with incredible strengths, but also some limitations. In this portion of the class, we will discuss what you CAN and CANNOT print, as well as ways to utilize the limitations of the letterpress method to be its greatest strength. This module is not only geared towards printers, but all stationers.
